1860 & 1890 PATTERN PRUSSIAN SHAKOS FOR THE JAGER & TECHNICAL ARMY BATAILONS

The original patterns for Military Shakos were developed in the late 1700's However the Imperial German Army developed the German shakos as we know them in black leather were introduced around the 1860's and these were added to over the next 20 years. (field badges and cockades were addd as various of the German states joined the Empire These shakos were taller than the later pattern ( 1890 ) and had a broad leather band round the bottom edge of the helmet . This early Shako was used in the Franco Prussian War and in various colonial excursions.

The 1890 new model Shako was introduced for Jaeger & Schutzen, Telegraph, some pioneer units , Train and latterly the Luftschiffer companies This later style was squatter than the 1860 style. Knopf 91 bosses were introduced for the chin straps and the lower leather band was removed All together a better aesthetic form was developed. This helmet was used in the Boxer Rebellion in China and all later German wars & particularly the Police after 1920'

It is interesting when researching the development of the German shako, various dates pop up but these usually relate to either differing States or smaller additions to the shako helmet itself.
I hope some of that helps,

Many of the shakos have stampings to the rear peaks. However I have centred on those stamps that set the size, the manufacturers & the date of manufacturer……………
