NOTE!…. because of the mass of reproduction of German medal cases both WW1 &WW2 , I take them apart ( it does not show ) to ensure they are original and so I can state it as such. Boxes & cases that cannot be identified as original are noted….

The LARGE Number of copy award cases for Iron crosses and War Service crosses
Made in Europe & England and swamping the market & Particularly Auction houses they are now endemic…! To identify if your box is original or not Remove the velvet / cloth base which the medal / cross rests on . If it is raised on wood splints and uses clear modern adhesive it is generally a copy.
I always take the box / case apart: and so when it states it is an original box / case…… IT IS !!!!

An excellent quality WW2 period German Iron cross 1st class marked with small hallmark on the coke bottle retaining pin. Looks like WS. ( Wagner & sohn ) Good classic Iron cross form. The IC.1 finish to the silvered metal is fine and the black finish shows little or no wear the blacking to the swastika itself is in fine condition. Good traditional flat form. Light tarnishing to the back & edges of the cross. A very good quality Iron cross.. An OK original 3 piece magnetic field worn WW.2 Iron Cross.. The case shows wear to the inner cream cloth base The box itself is not marked with the IC1 to the top but is in very fine condition & the silk lining to the inside of the lid is in excellent condition.

I certainly was caught with one The box is almost flawless unless you have the nerve to pull it apart then it is clearly a modern piece The unmarked eagle has two design flaws in it Enough said ! There is generally described to be 2 types of 1st and 2nd class clasps IE. 1st pattern and second pattern. As far as I can research it turns on details. The early ones had larger (wider) wreaths to the swastikas and also many had veins in the eagles wing feathers But as far as I can see the wreaths are the main feature the second type have ie. thin wreaths ….
